The Department of Music Education welcomes Frank Diaz of Indiana University to give the annual Carrigan Lecture. His talk is titled "Dancing with your Mind: The Promises and Perils of Mindfulness for Musicians." He writes: "Mindfulness is the process of bringing a present-centered, intentional, and non-judgmental state of awareness to everyday experience. Emerging research suggests that practicing mindfulness may result in a number of beneficial outcomes for musicians, including improved focus, psychological resilience, and prosocial feelings and behaviors. But what do we truly know about mindfulness and its potential to transform our life and work? How can we separate the hype from the reality, and how might mindfulness fit into our already busy lives? In this talk, I will discuss the promises and perils of mindfulness from my perspective as teacher, scholar, and practitioner of this ancient practice."
