Pride Starts Local: Ypsi Pride and the Power of Showing Up

This June, we’re proud to feature Ypsi Pride in honor of Pride Month—a time to uplift LGBTQIA+ voices, reflect on the past, and stand up for a more just future.

A Brief History of Pride Month

Pride Month honors the Stonewall Uprising, which began on June 28, 1969, when LGBTQIA+ patrons of the Stonewall Inn in New York City pushed back against a police raid. At the time, LGBTQIA+ people faced criminalization, harassment, and violence simply for existing in public. The resistance that night—led by trans women of color like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera—sparked a movement.

The first Pride marches took place one year later, in June 1970, in cities like New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. They weren’t festivals—they were acts of protest and defiance.

Today, Pride Month is celebrated around the world. It’s a time to honor LGBTQIA+ history, mourn lives lost to violence and discrimination, and continue pushing for equality. It’s also a time to celebrate love, joy, visibility, and progress.

Ypsi Pride brings the spirit of Pride to our doorstep.

It transforms downtown Ypsilanti into a space of visibility, creativity, and care. It’s a grassroots effort—powered by volunteers, local talent, and community pride.

This event matters because real estate is more than buying or selling property—it’s about creating safe, welcoming neighborhoods where everyone belongs. Pride isn’t just a moment—it’s a movement. And movements start when people show up for each other.
